September 7: Messianic Prophecies; God’s Unique Relationship with Israel

Suffering Servant

Ancient rabbis considered Isaiah 53 as a Messianic prophesy.  In the 11th century, Shlomo Yitzchaki (aka Rashi),referred this passage to the sufferings of the nation of Israel, despite the fact that rabbis such as the great Maimonides and Crispin thought it was wrong to apply this to Israel. They rather maintained the belief that this passage of Scripture was about Messiah. The reason for Rashi‟s attempt to make Israel the central focus of this passage was due to his seemingly anti-Christian bias, a fact to which he freely admitted.” *

Today, Rashi’s interpretation is accept by the rabbis who have deleted the passage from the schedule of readings followed by religious Jews around the world.

 Isaiah 52:13-15 – 53:4-6

13-15Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
14 Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;
15 So shall He sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
For what had not been told them they shall see,
And what they had not heard they shall consider.

4-6Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
