The Covenant with Death (Part 1)
We are now standing at the precipice of the 70th week in Daniel’s prophesy. It is important that we remember that only God knows the actual timing of each of these events, but we have hints from the use of “time” words like, “before,” “then,” “after.”
Daniel 9: 26-27a
26And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week.
Since the city and sanctuary were destroyed in 70 AD, the time between these two verses is almost 2,000 years, so we need to find the most important hint to the next piece in our puzzle.
We find it in the word translated as “confirm” or in Hebrew גָּבַר (gabar) which means “strengthen.” In other words, the subject “he” who we saw earlier in this series refers to the one called “anti-Messiah” will take an existing treaty (agreement or covenant) and make it stronger.
So we need to consider what is that “existing covenant” which has yet to be made. Scripture doesn’t give us a hint, but we can assume it either appeals to Israel or she is forced into agreement.
Regardless this treaty brings Israel closer to treaty that will soon become a “Covenant of Death” as described in Daniel.
PRAY FOR ISRAEL TO BEWARE OF A COVENANT THAT SEEMS GOOD BUT COULD LEAD TO THE COVENANT OF DEATH.
