October 12: Righteousness

Unlike the other covenants God made with Israel, the Mosaic Covenant was conditional – God’s blessings were conditioned by Israel’s obedience.

God showed His grace and mercy through His patience:

  • Provision for forgiveness of sin
  • Sending the prophets to call Israel to repentance
  • Temporary exile to Babylon
  • Scattering to the nations, with the promise of return.

He disciplined Israel because of His love for them and always with the purpose of restoration.

Deuteronomy 4:39-40

Therefore, know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

[The Jews] “rejection of Christ has resulted in their present calamity and exile.  We say with confidence that they will never be restored to their former condition.”  Origen of Alexanderia

He will set up a banner for the nations,
And will [e]assemble the outcasts of Israel,
And gather together the dispersed of Judah
From the four [f]corners of the earth. Isaiah 11:12
