November 27: God’s Memorial Name

God’s Memorial Name

To escape the famine in their land Israel went into Egypt.  At first, they were treated well because of Pharaoh’s respect for Joseph.  Soon however Israel became slaves to the Egyptians and were treated badly.

Surrounded by the false gods, they only knew of their God through the stories they had heard from their elders.  All the gods of Egypt had names; so Moses wanted to know God’s name.

Isaiah 52:4-6

For thus says the Lord God:

“My people went down at first
Into Egypt to dwell there;
Then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
Now therefore, what have I here,” says the Lord,
“That My people are taken away for nothing?

Those who rule over them
Make them wail,” says the Lord,
“And My name is blasphemed continually every day.
Therefore My people shall know My name;
Therefore they shall know in that day
That I am He who speaks:
‘Behold, it is I.’ ”

God showed Israel, Egypt and the entire world His name through His powerful deliverance of Israel. Until then He was only known to Abraham as אֵל שַׁדָּי (El Shadi.) but now declared to Moses and for all time His memorial name: יְהֹוָה (YHWH), the God who is actively and intimately involved in our lives.

PRAY FOR ISRAEL AND THE CHURCH TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND GOD’S MEMORIAL NAME.
