March 22: Passover

– God’s memorial name

During the Passover event God revealed to Moses His memorial name.  To best understand that awesome name we need to consider the context:

Exodus 2:23-25

Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.  And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them.

Exodus 3:8, 14a

So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians…And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”

This is a refrain heard throughout the symphony of Scripture:

  • Man suffers
    • Cries to God
  • God hears, remembers His promises, sees, understands, and
    • Comes to the rescue

God’s name יהוה (YHWH) reflects His intimate and active involvement in the lives of His children.
