June 23: Jacob’s Trouble – The Nations

-Punishment of Babylon

The world of the prophets was limited to the people and nations surrounding and impacting Israel.  Of course these ancient nations have today morphed but God’s warnings still apply as well as to nations not mentioned.

We’ve considered God’s judgment on Edom, Ammon, Syria, and Iran.  Today we’ll look at Babylon.

Most often we see Jerusalem and Babylon mentioned, so the Bible could be referred to as “the tale of two cities.” Israel is always referred to as the city of God and Babylon is the city of the great harlot and deceiver Satan.

Over the years God has partially judged her, but the only just and appropriate end to Babylon is her utter and complete destruction.

Jeremiah 51:7-9

Babylon was a golden cup in the Lord’s hand,
That made all the earth drunk.
The nations drank her wine;
Therefore the nations are deranged.
Babylon has suddenly fallen and been destroyed.
Wail for her!
Take balm for her pain;
Perhaps she may be healed.
We would have healed Babylon,
But she is not healed.
Forsake her, and let us go everyone to his own country;
For her judgment reaches to heaven and is lifted up to the skies.

Revelation 14:8

And another angel followed, saying, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Revelation 18:1-3

After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.”
