June 10: Righteousness

Current events in Israel reflect the need to pray that righteousness based on God’s Word prevail.  We are facing several major issues: 1) first the building and now removal of 5 homes in legally contested land in a “settlement”, and 2) the deportation of illegal migrants.

Man’s laws and the religion of “humanism” will always pervert the ways of God as everyone does what seems right in their own eyes (emphasis mine).  Meanwhile the poor are starving, religious “rights” of various faiths are strangling the country, housing costs are beyond the reach of many, etc. etc, etc.

As we pray we remember that Abraham was considered by God to be righteous because he believed God was who He said He was, had done and would do what He said He would do.  We are made righteous by God’s grace through faith and cleansing of sin.  God works/deeds are a result of being righteous not the way to achieve it.

Exodus 23:1-9: “You shall not circulate a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice. You shall not show partiality to a poor man in his dispute.

“If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden, and you would refrain from helping it, you shall surely help him with it.

“You shall not pervert the judgment of your poor in his dispute. Keep yourself far from a false matter; do not kill the innocent and righteous. For I will not justify the wicked. And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the discerning and perverts the words of the righteous.”
