July 15: Righteousness

Israel is not the only nation which suffers under the oppression of the wicked, but she is the only nation called specifically and uniquely by God to reflect His righteousness.

The “Law,” given to Israel was to guide her and separate her from the other nations by dictating her external behavior.  But the Law was impossible to keep then and now because it demanded a righteous heart.  God’s standard of righteousness is internal.  Only a pure and righteous heart can result in righteous behavior.

Psalms: 11:2-3 For look! The wicked bend their bow,
 they make ready their arrow on the string,
 that they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.

If the foundations are destroyed,
 what can the righteous do?

Psalms 55:4 -11 My heart is severely pained within me,
 and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.  Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me,
 and horror has overwhelmed me.

So I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
 I would fly away and be at rest.  Indeed, I would wander far off,
 and remain in the wilderness. Selah.  I would hasten my escape
from the windy storm and tempest.”

Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues,
for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go around it on its walls;
iniquity and trouble are also in the midst of it.  Destruction is in its midst;
 oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets.
