Paul uses important but challenging words in his letter to the Romans. So let’s review.
For I bear them (Israel) witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
Righteous [צַדִּיק – tsad·dēk] and [δίκαιος – dē’-kī-os] means accepted, be right, approved by God.
God’s standards are so high that man cannot achieve righteousness by his own efforts. But righteousness is the only basis by which man can be justified (accepted) by God.
So Paul asks and answers the question “How can I be righteous?”
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.
