Antiochus’ attempts to conquer Israel militarily and culturally failed.
The Psalmist warned that Israel’s enemies would try to erase her name from history:
Psalm 83: 2-4
[B]ehold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head.
They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”
When Rome conquered Israel in 70, they tried to do that by renaming Israel “Palestine” after her mortal enemies – the Philistines.
But Israel will never cease to be a nation or a people of God.
2 Samuel 5:20
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.
PRAY FOR ISRAEL’S ENEMIES TO ACCEPT THE GOD OF ISRAEL AND BE AT PEACE.
I didn’t know that about the name Palestine! Thanks for educating us. What is todays picture…and where is it?
Isabella, this is the front of a multiple family dwelling in the Jewish Quarter in the Old City. Each family puts their Hanukkiah on the doorpost. We see this on many of the doors.
